VSI History

VSI was incorporated in the State of Florida in 1987 to provide both product and services to physical security equipment dealers and manufacturers. The organizers of the company were experienced, independent vault construction contractors in Florida and the surrounding markets.

The original business was started in Virginia in the early '70s. The business migrated to Pompano Beach, Florida in the early 80s to meet the growing need in the Florida market. This move coincided with the introduction of Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. testing of vaults and vault doors.

The movement away from steel plate constructed vaults provided the business with an opportunity to provide a more secure product offering with the introduction of the U.L. lightweight vault panel they began manufacturing in Pompano Beach. The business quickly outgrew the facilities and the business was moved to Clewiston, Florida, where it introduced the lightweight concrete U.L. listed panels.

Once again, the demand for the products required larger facilities and the business moved to LaBelle, Florida, where it was incorporated under the name of Vault Structures, Inc. in 1987. In order to provide a complete vault it was necessary for VSI to also provide a vault door. Being a young and innovative company, VSI designed and built vault doors under the Thor name. In a short period of time the popularity of the panels and the new doors allowed for more innovation with the production of doors of special sizes and features as dictated by its worldwide customers. VSI prospered by providing the needed products quickly and at a reasonable cost. VSI's reputation was being built by its superior support of the customer-dealer in providing the necessary products, drawings, delivery, and installation teams required.

With VSI growing, the founders realized that to grow beyond a regional company it was necessary to increase both capital and management. Through their contacts, a group of private New York investors added capital and brought in Kevin McNamara as Executive Vice President.

Kevin, a CPA, hails from New York and has all the necessary business experience and degrees to both run and grow the company. The combination of Kevin, and the founders. provided the experience and enthusiasm to make VSI a leader in the industry.

In 1996, the production facility was moved from LaBelle to Fort Myers, Florida, where it has one of the most extensive machine shops as part of its 45000 square foot production facility. The facility is operated by the General Manager, Tony Marks. Tony is responsible for the complete manufacturing operation.

As the climate in Fort Myers is temperate, actual production of the panels is performed outdoors thus contributing to a more affordable product.

The company experienced great sadness with the untimely passing of the founder in 1998 and this delayed the program for the growth envisioned.

In early 1999, Kevin was named CEO and Don Adams was brought on board to develop the sales, marketing and product development for the expanding company.

Don brings years of experience in sales, marketing and product development. In addition his experience includes 10 years in banking both in the US and in Canada.

In addition to U.L. listed vault panels and vault doors VSI also produces water resistant, custom sized and hydraulic assisted U.L. listed vault doors. Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. listed, TL 15 and TL 30 rated plate safes were introduced in 1999 together with safe interiors in standard and custom designs. A line of competitively priced Lockers was also introduced. VSI has developed a schedule of product introductions to enhance its overall physical security line.

In 2001 VSI opened its NE facility in Millville N.J. and appointed Ronnie Spencer General Manager. This facility includes an installation and service department servicing the VSI dealers and customers in the surrounding states. In addition VSI formed VSI MOBILMIX, a concrete division, specializing in the delivery of fresh concrete in the growing Ft Myers area. The growing fleet of trucks services homeowners as well as contractors in addition to providing the special security mix required for VSI concrete products.

VSI MOBILMIX uses mobile mixers that carry all the ingredients to mix the exact amount and the exact mix required for each job, small or large. Added features, important in the South Florida market include the ability to mix and pour concrete in solid colors as well as providing both poly and steel reinforcing fibers.

In 2003 VSI MOBILMIX established a satellite facility on Sanibel Island to serve this upscale community until the causeway between the Sanibel/Capitiva and the Mainland could be repaired or replaced so heavy loads could make the journey safely. Randy Franklin is the General Manager of this Division.

Recognizing the potential for the expansion of the VSI "concrete" product line Sara Cheney was appointed Director of Product Development in 2003. Sara brings years of experience, working in both the engineering of Physical Product and Engineered Cementitious Composites. VSI is working today on material research to be used in products with leading scientists, universities, government agencies and companies in a worldwide effort to protect both lives and assets. It is this commitment to Research and Development that has made VSI the fastest growing manufacturer of security enclosures and protection barriers.

In 2004, Scott Reed joined VSI as our Material Scientist to work in the research effort of the various concrete projects. In addition, because of Scott"s manufacturing background, he has been instrumental in setting up and training personnel on the new manufacturing equipment. He is also responsible for the pre-manufacturing processes for new products. In addition he is a qualified GSA Container Inspector, Master Class which is important when working on government projects.

In 2004 The VSI outgrew the facility in Millville N.J. and relocated to a 10 acre site in Cedarville NJ with an existing manufacturing facility that has been renovated for the manufacturing of panels, vault doors and accessories. This facility was upgraded in 2008 with an expansion of a specially designed building to increase production for dealers in the NE US. In addition it serves as a regional service office and warehouse.

VSI continued to introduce new products in 2004 with two self designed lines of Safe Deposit Boxes, the USA and American Series. These represent the latest in engineering, manufacturing techniques and materials available today. In addition, the first VSI 1000 Motor Banking units were delivered in 2005.

In 2005 additional bank equipment products were released to round out the product line, including special night depositories, standard lockers and special safes. In addition current products underwent redesign and upgrade as new manufacturing equipment was delivered.

2006 saw the delivery of the first VSI Deal Drawers and continued research on new products. In 2007, the MOBILMIX facility on Sanibel was closed down as the Sanibel Bridge was completed. This allowed for the equipment return to work on the mainland.

VSI introduced, a lighter, U.L. Class 111 vault door was introduced. In addition a new line of U.L. lightweight concrete panels (Hercvlite) were introduced that carry the UL label in all classes. These allow VSI to claim the thinnest panel on the market, at 2".

A new TL30 safe, with composite door was released after months of testing required by UL to meet their new standards for TL30 safes. VSI was successful in getting a UL label for all classes of vent ports which can now allow an airflow opening of 4" x 16" up to 4" x 36". This is of note as the port will greatly reduce the costs of heating and air conditioning large vaults as it will reduce the number of air ducts and equipment required.

In 2008 VSI expects to introduce a new standard in excellence with the re-introduction of a Round vault Door built to meet the standards of today and the future. This will carry a UL listing Class 111.

VSI has an aggressive growth schedule and can only be supported through the help of its customer-dealers who are encouraged to grow their businesses through the use of VSI products.
